In our previous article we shared about our passion for SDG 5 and how we integrate it in our 8-5 grind. Today, we share about another SDG that is close to our hearts: SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure)
Events are a vibrant part of our world, fostering connection and igniting ideas. But traditional event planning often leaves a hefty environmental footprint. Thankfully, innovation is changing the game, offering exciting ways to make events more sustainable. There are currently cutting-edge solutions that are transforming the event industry including; virtual hybrid events, smart venues, data driven planning and pre-planned catering.
Ethos: Walking the Talk on SDG 9
At Ethos, we’re not just talking about sustainability, we’re actively living it.
The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 focuses on Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure- perfectly aligning with our mission. Here’s how we champion SDG 9 and ensure our events are truly sustainable:
- Innovation as a Guiding Principle: We constantly challenge ourselves to find new ways to make events greener while enhancing the experience? Can we innovate around event themes, attendee demographics, etc ? We’re always asking such questions.
- Sustainable Infrastructure from the Ground Up: As event organizers, we don’t always have direct control over physical infrastructure. However, we try to look for venues that prioritize SDG 9 through features like:
- Energy Efficiency (LED lighting) or maximizing day light.
- Waste Management; this is by using glass bottles or jars that can be reused instead of plastic bottles, hire equipment instead of using disposables.
- Pre-catering planning. We also ensure food options are as per the attendees preference to avoid food waste
- Access for Persons with Disabilities like ramps, parking space, toilets, braille, etc.
- Technology for a Paperless Future: Is there a ground-breaking technology we can integrate? We have so far succeeded with virtual registrations and check ins for our clients including The Uganda Heart Association, Nordic Embassies of Uganda, Enterprise Uganda and The Association of Physicians of Uganda, saving time, paper handouts, reducing waste and man hours of data analysis and streamlining the process. We intend to make this process even smoother and transferable to other event activities including virtual networking and tours and attendee appointments.
Beyond Business: Maximizing Positive Impact
Ethos goes beyond sustainable business practices.
We integrate environmentally friendly and socially conscious principles throughout every stage of event planning, strategizing, and execution. Our goal is to minimize our ecological footprint while maximizing positive impact on the communities we serve.
The Future of Sustainable Events: A Collaborative Effort
By embracing innovation and collaborating with sustainability leaders like Ethos, event planners can create impactful experiences that leave a positive footprint. Imagine conferences powered by renewable energy, zero-waste catering experiences, and attendees actively participating in sustainability initiatives. This future is closer than ever, and it’s an exciting one!
