I was nearing the end of my Bachelor of Development Studies degree when an opportunity presented itself that would shape my university experience: running for Guild Speaker in Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Despite my involvement in various clubs in my teenage years and early university, I felt a strong desire to contribute more to my campus community. It didnt make it any better being a woman studying arts in a medicine and male-dominated campus  but I knew I had the skills and passion to lead.

At just 20 years old, I was the second woman in MUST history to vie for the position of Guild Speaker. Backed by financial family support, I sought guidance, networked with experienced leaders, and even had a professional headshot taken from Afro Studios to enhance my image. To be honest, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. But my convictions got the better of me and it was a one way ticket, and guess what- it paid off!

Through my journey as Guild Speaker, I learned invaluable lessons in:

• Self awareness: I confirmed what I was good at that I would enhance and what I sucked at that I would either avoid or improve. 
• Group Dynamics: Effectively managing diverse teams and fostering collaboration.
• Conflict Resolution: Resolving disputes and finding common ground.
• Decision Making: Making informed and strategic choices.
• Public Speaking: Communicating effectively and confidently to large audiences.
• Negotiation: Building relationships and reaching mutually beneficial agreements.
• Persistence: Overcoming obstacles and staying focused on goals.
• Confidence: Believing in oneself and one’s abilities.

However, the role was not without its challenges. Leading a 55-strong guild, composed of individuals with varying ideologies and levels of maturity, required a delicate balance. There were moments of frustration and opposition, but I also experienced significant opportunities for growth and development. I am grateful for the opportunities to represent students at conferences organized by the Centre for Higher Education and Transformation in Kenya and South Africa.

My experiences as Guild Speaker equipped me with the skills and experiences necessary to succeed in leadership roles. I learned that leadership requires sacrifice, determination, and resilience. By seizing opportunities and taking action, I have been able to achieve significant milestones in my career.

Every leadership role is a stepping stone towards becoming a more effective leader, taking on greater responsibility, and ultimately making a positive impact on society.
